Can a Horse Wear a Fly Sheet in the Rain?

While fly sheets are designed to provide protection against flies and other insects, they are not typically designed to be used in the rain. Most fly sheets are made from lightweight and breathable fabrics that are not waterproof, which means that they will not keep your horse dry in the rain.

Wearing a fly sheet in the rain can also create a damp environment underneath the sheet, which can lead to skin irritation or other health issues. Additionally, if the fly sheet becomes heavy and saturated with water, it can cause discomfort to your horse and may even slip or shift around, causing rubbing or chafing.

If you need to keep your horse dry in the rain, it's best to use a waterproof turnout sheet or rain sheet instead of a fly sheet. These types of sheets are made from waterproof materials and are designed to keep your horse dry in wet conditions. When the rain stops, you can remove the turnout sheet or rain sheet and put the fly sheet back on if needed.
